How to Search Cecil County Probate Records
There are a few ways to search for probate court records in Cecil County. The fastest method is online. The Maryland Register of Wills website has an Estate Search tool that covers all counties. You can look up cases by name, estate number, or filing date. Data goes back to 1998 for most counties. Some older records may show up too. The system updates at the end of each work day, so it stays current.
When you search on Estate Search, use a percent sign as a wildcard. For example, typing "Smith%" pulls up all last names that start with Smith. You need at least a last name to run a search. The system caps results at 500 records, so add more details if your search is too broad. Each result shows the estate number, case type, date of death, filing date, and who serves as personal rep. You can also check docket history for each case in Cecil County.
The Maryland Judiciary Case Search is a second free tool. It covers court cases from 1965 on. This can show probate matters that went to the Orphans' Court in Cecil County. Search by party name or case number. Both tools are free to use and open to the public.
For in-person searches, visit the Elkton courthouse. Call (410) 996-5330 first. Staff will look up records and make copies for you. Bring the name of the person whose estate you want to find, along with any dates you know.
Note: The Estate Search system times out after two minutes of no activity, so have your search info ready before you start.
